How to Keep Apples Fresh Longer with Lime (or Lemon) Juice

I love apples!

They are one of my favorite snacks, but I hate that they turn brown almost as soon as you bite it or slice it.

So, I did some research on how to keep apple slices fresh longer. I found a few tips online about using  things like pineapple juice, 7up or Sprite. None of which sounded tasty or healthy. (Not a big fan of pineapple.)

Then I asked a friend, and she said that I should use lime or lemon juice.

I immediately loved the idea, it sounded pretty good. Maybe I’m just craving something sour?

Who knows…

Here’s what I did:

Soak the apple slices in ice water for 3 to 5 minutes, then in lime  (or lemon) juice.

Divide into snack size portions and store in Ziploc bags in the fridge until ready to use.

Would you believe that these apples have been sitting out in room temperature for almost 5 hours?

Amazing huh?

They still look wonderful and with only a few darker spots.

You can pre-package these and take as an on-the-go snack or pack it in your preschooler’s lunch!! :)

This is delicious and easy to make!

Now, if I can just find a way to prolong banana slices……

I always use cream of tartar in my water. About 1/2 -1 tsp in small bowl of water, then put in apple slices and let sit for a few minutes. It works just as well as the lemon or lime juice but adds no extra ‘taste’. Just another idea!

I just have to try your tip! I’m okay with an occasional lemony tasting apple slices, but sometimes I just want my apples to taste like an apple. :)
